A Comparison of Dooyeweerd with Habermas
Habermas is a major thinker, with enormous depth and breadth, comparable to Dooyeweerd's own. His ideas are increasingly being employed in areas such as management and information systems (as e.g. Critical Systems Heuristics, Emancipatory Information Systems Design, etc.). Habermas and Dooyeweerd share a number of ideas, such as the significance of everyday living (lifeworld), the inescapability of presuppositions, etc. This sub-site (only just started) contains comparisons of Habermasian and Dooyeweerdian thought.
- A table comparing some Habermasian and Dooyeweerdian concepts.
- On Enriching Critical Theory - a brief introduction to Dooyeweerdian philosophy and how it might be able to enrich Critical Theory in sensitive ways. A page for those coming from the Habermasian Critical approach, rather than the Dooyeweerdian. This paper covers:
- Presuppositions and the non-absoluteness of theoretical thought
- The diversity and coherence of life
- Theory and practice
- Progress in knowledge
- Emancipation and the Dooyeweerdian notion of shalom
- Habermas' notion of Lifeworld and Dooyeweerd's notion of everyday living
- Lifeworld - a more detailed tabular comparison of Habermas' and Dooyeweerd's notions of lifeworld (everyday life). - *** New 26 January 2005 ***
- On achieving agreement rather than breakdown in communication.
